Surfaced
Surfaced is a social platform, and child safety is a non-negotiable priority across everything we build. We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on Surfaced. This page sets out the standards we hold ourselves to, the controls we operate, and how anyone can report concerns to us. These standards apply globally to all users of Surfaced, regardless of age, location, or how they access the platform. They are reviewed regularly and updated as laws, technology, and best practices evolve.
Child: Any person under the age of 18, or the higher age of majority defined by applicable local law.
CSAE (Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation). Any content, behaviour, or activity that sexually abuses, exploits, or endangers a child. This includes grooming, sextortion, trafficking, the production or solicitation of sexual content involving a child, and any conduct intended to facilitate offline harm.
CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material). Any visual depiction, including photographs, videos, illustrations, and computer-generated or AI-generated imagery, involving a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct. CSAM is illegal under the laws of virtually every jurisdiction we operate in, and is prohibited on Surfaced without exception.
The following are strictly prohibited and will result in immediate action, including permanent account termination and reporting to law enforcement where required:
We operate a layered safety stack covering account creation, content moderation, and behavioural detection.
Age verification and account standards. Users must meet our minimum age requirements at signup, and we apply additional friction and verification on accounts that show signals associated with underage use or predatory behaviour.
Automated detection. We scan media uploaded to Surfaced against industry hash databases for known CSAM, including [PhotoDNA / NCMEC hash sharing / Thorn Safer or equivalent service]. We also use classifiers to detect novel CSAM and grooming patterns in text and imagery.
Human review. A trained safety team reviews escalated reports and edge cases. Reviewers receive ongoing training on CSAE indicators, trauma-informed practice, and wellness support.
Behavioural signals. We monitor for patterns associated with predatory behaviour, including rapid outreach to multiple minor accounts, repeated attempts to move conversations off-platform, and use of grooming language.
Proactive limits. Adult and minor account interactions are restricted by default. Discoverability, messaging, and content visibility settings for minors default to the most protective configuration.
Every user on Surfaced has direct, in-app access to a reporting mechanism without needing to leave the app. We treat reports of suspected CSAE or CSAM as our highest-priority queue.
Where to find it. On any profile, post, message, or
comment, tap the menu icon and select Report. You can
also access the full reporting flow from
What you can report. Reports cover suspected CSAM, grooming or inappropriate contact with a minor, sextortion, accounts you believe belong to a minor in violation of our age policy, and any other child safety concern.
What happens next. Reports are queued for human review against this policy. CSAM and credible CSAE reports are prioritised and actioned on a 24/7 basis. We may take action including removing content, suspending or terminating accounts, preserving evidence, and reporting to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and other competent authorities as required by law.
Alternative channels. Reports can also be submitted via:
You do not need to identify yourself to file a report. Anonymous reports are reviewed with the same priority as identified ones.
When we obtain actual knowledge of CSAM on Surfaced, we act in accordance with applicable law and the following procedures:
Surfaced complies with all applicable child safety laws in the jurisdictions where we operate, including but not limited to:
Where local law sets a higher standard than these policies, the higher standard applies.
